2008 Michigan Dairy Farm Business Analysis Summary AgEcon
Wittenberg, Eric; Wolf, Christopher A..
This report summarizes the financial and production records of 116 dairy farms from throughout Michigan in 2008. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from milk and dairy animal sales. The records came from Michigan State University’s TelFarm project and the Farm Credit Service system in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. The farms are larger than would be the average dairy farm in Michigan. While considerable variation in the data exists, average values are reported in the summary tables and discussion that follows.

A case-study approach to profitability assessment in fermented African locust beans (iru) production using break-even analysis CIGR Journal
Atoyebi, Jelili Olaniyi; Bello, Sururah Apinke; Owolarafe, Oseni Kehinde.
The significance of a break-even point analysis is much important to the small- scale enterprises in determining profit or loss incurred. In this study, a case study approach was used to test this concept on iru production using structured oral interviews and visual observation of a production centre in Nigeria. Data analysis was achieved using production cost, the unit quantity and break-even point analysis. The results show that the monthly average cost of N 32,237.00, the monthly average variable cost of N71,334.00, Contribution Margin Ratio of 47.06 % and break-even sales of N 68,502.00 were obtained using a traditional method of iru production (TIPP). In a mechanized method (MIPP), monthly average fixed cost of N 85,887.00, the monthly average...

A JUHOK MESTERSÉGES TERMÉKENYÍTÉSÉNEK ÉS IVARZÁS-INDUKÁLÁSÁNAK ÖKONÓMIAI ELEMZÉSE AgEcon
Vegh, Julianna; Gulyas, Laszlo; Szalka, Eva; Nemeth, Attila.

A KÜLFÖLDI TŐKE SZEREPE ÉS A GAZDÁLKODÁS EREDMÉNYESSÉ-GÉRE GYAKOROLT HATÁSA AZ ÉLELMISZERIPARBAN AgEcon
Hodina, Peter; Lamfalusi, Ibolya.
A kilencvenes évtized első éveiben a külföldi tőkebefektetés egyik kiemelt cél-pontja az élelmiszeripar volt. A rendkívül gyors vállalat-felvásárlás és a megva-lósított tőkeemelés hatására 1993-ban a (vizsgált) élelmiszeripar összes jegyzett tőkéjének már 43 százaléka volt külföldi tulajdonban. Ez a részesedés 2000-re meghaladta a 60 százalékot. A dinamikusan növekvő tőkebefektetési tendencia 2000 után megtört, s azóta minden évben, kisebb-nagyobb mértékben mind a jegyzett tőke, mind pedig a külföldi tőke csökken az élelmiszeriparban. A 2000. évet megelőző időszakban az élelmiszeriparban jelentkező többletki-bocsátás teljes egészében a külföldi tőkét is működtető vállalkozásokhoz kapcso-lódott. A 2000. évben, illetve utána alapvető változás következett...

A műszaki fejlesztési környezet néhány meghatározó eleme az Európai Unió mezőgazdaságában AgEcon
Baranyai, Zsolt.
A vizsgálat eredményei rámutattak arra, hogy az EU-országok üzemei meglehetősen heterogének a műszaki fejlesztés feltételrendszerét illetően, amely magában foglalja az üzemi koncentráció mértékét, a műszaki fejlesztés színvonalát, a rendelkezésre álló pénzügyi forrásokon (fedezeti összeg és támogatás) keresztül megjelenő fejlesztési potenciált és a fejlesztésekben lekötött tőke hatékonyságát is. Magyarország helyzetét értékelve, sajnálatos módon kedvezőtlen tendenciák mutathatók ki, hasonlóan a legtöbb 2004-ben csatlakozott országhoz. A fennálló problémák megoldását az ágazat racionális fejlesztése jelenti, melyben a tőkehatékonysági szempon¬tok kiemelt szerepet kapnak. A tőkehatékonyság javulását eredményezheti a kon¬centráció, ami bekövetkezhet egyrészt...

A Panel Data Analysis of the Repayment Capacity of Farmers AgEcon
Durguner, Sena.
Using a balanced panel of 264 unique Illinois farmers from 2000 to 2004, this study identifies the most pertinent factors that explain the repayment capacity of farmers. After correcting for endogeneity bias caused by farmer-specific effects, one year lagged debt-to-asset ratio and soil productivity are both found to be significantly correlated with the coverage ratio at the 5% significance level using random effects. The finding is significant because it can enhance agricultural lenders’ ability to assess creditworthiness, screen borrowers, manage loan loss reserves, and price loans, thereby decreasing lenders’ costs associated with defaulted loans and ultimately reducing the costs borne by the government and taxpayers.

A Stochastic Budgeting Analysis of Three Alternative Scenarios to Convert from Beef-Cattle Farming to Game Ranching AgEcon
Grove, Bennie; Taljaard, Pieter R.; Cloete, Philip C..
The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the profitability and financial feasibility of three alternative scenarios to convert from beef-cattle farming to game ranching. The analyses acknowledge the importance of quantifying the probability of failure or success when making investment decisions. Risk is incorporated into a standard net present value analysis using risk simulation. De-trended historical auction prices of live game and on-the-hoof prices of weaner cattle were used to quantify price variability. The stochastic net present value analyses indicate that game ranching is more profitable than cattle farming. Although an investment in a limited number of common game species is financially feasible, the cash flow analysis indicates a...

A támogatások szerepe a magyar mezőgazdaságban AgEcon
Kovacs, Gabor.

Herczeg, Adrienn.
A versenyképes termelés, a jövedelmező gazdálkodás érdekében a megfelelő tőkeszerkezet, a tevékenység számára „optimális” tőkestruktúra kialakítása elengedhetetlen része a pénzügyi vezetők feladatainak, amit a vállalatok értékmaximalizálása során számításba kell venniük.

Karacsony, Peter.
The examination of competitiveness – thanks to its many definitions and the applied research methods – is a complex task, and this is especially true in the case of agricultural products. The competitiveness of Hungarian agricultural product has to this day been examined by several foreign and Hungarian experts and the results of their examinations have been made public. At the same time very little special literature deals with the different explanations and interpretations of the concept of competitiveness, and the analysis of the suitability of the measurement methods. In my essay I attempt to show the locatable definitions of competitiveness, and to show without aiming for completeness, the measurement methods which are deemed acceptable in special...

Advances in apple culture worldwide Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Robinson,Terence.
Over the last 60 years, planting densities for apple have increased as improved management systems have been developed. Dwarfing rootstocks have been the key to the dramatic changes in tree size, spacing and early production. The Malling series of dwarfing rootstocks (M.9 and M.26) have been the most important dwarfing rootstocks in the world but are poorly adapted in some areas of the world and they are susceptible to the bacterial disease fire blight and the soil disease complex, apple replant disease which limits their uses in some areas. Rootstock breeding programs in several parts of the world are developing improved rootstocks with resistance to fire blight, and replant disease, and improved cold hardiness and yield efficiency. A second important...

AN ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF THE WHOLE-FARM IMPACT OF PRECISION AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Olson, Kent D.; Elisabeth, Pascal.
The full impact of an investment in a management information system (MIS), such as precision agriculture (PA), comes from improved managerial decision making throughout the whole farm and not just from improvements in a specific part of the farm. This study was conducted to determine whether the adoption of PA had a positive impact on whole-farm profitability. To overcome problems of simultaneity and self-selection in the adoption decision of PA, this study used a two stage econometric model using data from farms in Southwest Minnesota. The PA adoption decision was evaluated in the first stage, and the impact of adopting PA was evaluated in the second stage. The whole farm rate of return to assets (ROA) was used to measure the impact of PA. For all 212...

An Economic Risk Analysis of Stocker Grazing on Conservation Tillage Small Grains Forage in Arkansas AgEcon
Watkins, K. Bradley; Hignight, Jeffrey A.; Beck, Paul A.; Anders, Merle M.; Hubbell, Donald S., III; Gadberry, Shane.
This study evaluates both the profitability and risk efficiency of grazing stocker steers on conservation tillage winter wheat pasture using simulation and stochastic efficiency with respect to a function (SERF). Average daily gains are simulated for steers grazed on conventional tillage (CT), reduced tillage (RT) and no-till (NT) winter wheat pasture. Steer price distributions and prices for key production inputs such as diesel, fertilizer, and glyphosate are also simulated. Stocker steer net return distributions by tillage treatment are constructed and ranked for risk efficiency using SERF. The results indicate the NT system is the most profitable and most risk efficient of the three tillage systems, followed by the RT system. Both conservation tillage...
